An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number assigned to every device connected to the internet. It works similarly to a postal address: it tells other computers and servers where to send data. When you visit a website, your device's IP address is what allows that website's server to send the page content back to you instead of to someone else.
Every device on a network — a phone, laptop, router, or server — needs an IP address to communicate. Your public IP address is the one visible to websites and services outside your home or office network, and it's the one this tool detects.
IPv4 is the older addressing format, written as four numbers separated by dots (for example, 192.0.2.1). It was designed decades ago and only supports a limited number of unique addresses — a limit the internet has already reached.

On its own, an IP address can reveal general, network-level information: the internet provider or hosting company that owns the address block, and an approximate geographic region — usually at the country or city level, tied to where that provider routes traffic rather than your exact physical location.
An IP address does not normally reveal your name, home address, or other personal details. However, websites can combine your IP address with other signals — such as cookies, account logins, and browser characteristics — to build a more complete picture of a visitor over time. This is one reason many privacy-conscious users pair IP awareness with other habits, like using a temporary email for services they don't fully trust.
Most home internet connections use what's called a dynamic IP address, which your provider can reassign periodically — for example, when your router restarts or after a certain time period. Switching networks (from home Wi-Fi to mobile data, or to a public Wi-Fi hotspot) will also change your visible IP address, since each network routes your traffic through a different provider.
Some providers and business connections use static IP addresses instead, which stay the same over time. If you check this tool from different networks or devices, seeing a different IP address each time is expected behavior, not an error.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) routes your internet traffic through a separate server before it reaches its destination. Websites you visit will see the VPN server's IP address instead of your own, which changes what a basic IP lookup reveals.
A VPN does not make you completely anonymous or fully secure online. Other identifying signals — such as account logins, cookies, and browser fingerprinting — can still be used to recognize a visitor across sessions, regardless of which IP address is shown.
